That’s right – the Stones River National Military Park was established by the War Department, 64 years after the battle.  The Battlefield was transferred to the National Park Service in 1933.

Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park managed Stones River National Military Park from 1933 till 1955.  The Park was designated as a national battlefield in 1960.

The ‘original’ battlefield covered more than 3,700 acres – almost six square miles…  Various land acquisitions have increased the size of the Battlefield in 1988 and 1991.  Today the size of the Battlefield stands at 712 acres.  Even with more than 700 acres, only 17 percent of the original battlefield is located within the boundary of Stones River National Battlefield.
